EARTHQUAKE STATUS
A magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred 10km south-east of Christchurch at 12:51, February 22, 2011. Depth (focal depth): 5km. There have been 26 aftershocks greater than magnitude 4, with four greater than magnitude 5. Considerable damage has been reported in the Christchurch Central Business District and in Lyttelton. A more thorough assessment of the damage will be completed over the next 24 hours. Rescue work is likely to take days to complete. Aftershocks are likely to continue and this could lead to further building damage or collapse. A large number of people have been pulled alive from collapsed buildings as rescuers have continued to work throughout the night under floodlights. The focus overnight and continuing into the morning is on rescuing those who are trapped. Search and rescue teams alongside emergency services are coordinating this effort.
DAMAGE ASSESSMENT
The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM) is assessing information with the assistance of scientific advisors and Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Groups. The National Crisis Management Centre has been activated. To minimise loading on the telecommunications network, people should use txt messaging to check if friends and family are safe There are reports of widespread building collapse (especially in the central city). The earthquake was felt widely across the South Island. Christchurch City declared a state of emergency at 1445 hrs. National agencies have been activated and are being coordinated via the National Crisis Management Centre. The NCMC is anticipating a need for temporary accommodation due to the extensive building damage.
POLICE REINFORCEMENTS
Police officers including those skilled in disaster victim identification roles are travelling to Christchurch as part of the emergency response. About 200 staff have been mobilised as part of the immediate response with another 130 expected to travel in the next few days to support their Canterbury colleagues and other agencies. Police are urging people to stay out of the Christchurch central city business area. Overnight rain is not helping the situation but emergency services and disaster response agencies are continuing all possible efforts to search buildings in the CBD and other parts of the city.
HELP AND ADVICE
Expect aftershocks. Each time one is felt, drop, cover, and hold on. Check yourself first for injuries and get first aid if necessary before helping injured or trapped persons. Assess your home or workplace for damage. If the building appears unsafe get everyone out. Use the stairs, not an elevator and when outside, watch out for fallen power lines or broken gas lines. Stay out of damaged areas. Look for and extinguish small fires if it is safe to do so. Fire is a significant hazard following earthquakes. Listen to the radio for updated emergency information and instructions.
Help people who require special assistance - infants, elderly people, those without transportation, families who may need additional help, people with disabilities, and the people who care for them.
BREAKING NEWS - 118 DEAD AND 228 STILL MISSING
It has now been four days since the devastating Christchurch earthquake. This morning the official death toll rose above 100. It is certain to rise further, and as yet, only four names have been released to the public. Prime Minister John Key said authorities are very worried about the 228 missing. He says the police have "done a very forensic job of working through the list so these are people we have every reason to believe have been caught up in this tragedy".
Another news has been reported that a medical specialist used tradesmen's tools to amputate the legs of an earthquake victim while he lay trapped under a beam in the collapsed Pyne Gould Corporation building. The female urologist from Melbourne had to use what was at hand - a knife contained in a fold-out Leatherman multi-tool and a hacksaw - to amputate both legs above the knee. She saved the 52-year-old's life. The man, who does not wish to be named, is recuperating in Waikato Hospital and faces a long course of rehabilitation. Brisbane urologist Dr Stuart Philip was nearby while his colleague from Melbourne performed the operation.

BREAKING NEWS - EARTHQUAKE "NOT JUST NZ's TRAGEDY"
Tuesday's devastating 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Christchurch is not just New Zealand's tragedy, Foreign Minister Murray McCully says. Addressing media this afternoon, Mr McCully said the rescue phase after the earthquake was drawing to its conclusion. "We are going through a difficult period as more are recovered and more and more families find out their loved ones are deceased." Mr McCully said he had been in contact with overseas officials about informing next of kin about relatives' deaths. "We are getting to the stage where we will be giving bad news to these families," he said. Mr McCully could not say how many of the missing were foreign nationals and how many were New Zealand residents. "I can say clearly this is not just New Zealand's tragedy." Earthquake Minister Gerry Brownlee said the national state of emergency declared after the earthquake hit was likely to continue for several weeks. Mr Brownlee said the EQC had received 181,000 claims as a result of the September 4 earthquake and another 130,000 are expected after this week's quake "making it one of the biggest insurance events in the world".
